Applying Force With Magnetizable Beads

A magnetizable bead (center) is placed on the surface of the tectorial membrane (TM). Electromagnets are used to apply force to the bead, and this force is coupled to the TM. The resulting displacement of the TM is measured using optical techniques. This technique allows the application of nano-Newton forces at frequencies up to 100 Hz.
